World’s Largest Bibingcrepe at Halfmoon Asian Cafe

30 Nov

November 23rd was quite a normal day for the city dwellers of Tomas Morato. But in Halfmoon Asian Cafe, something incredibly different was unveiled as the bloggers witnessed the unveiling of the largest bibingcrepe ever made.

Halfmoon Asian Cafe offers one-of-a-kind “bibingcrepe” and good old home-cooked Filipino favorites
Located on Tomas Morato Avenue, just a stone’s throw away from ABS-CBN and beside Bluewater Day Spa, Halfmoon Asian Café is the place to be if you’re the type who enjoys good coffee and conversations and more.

Bibingcrepe has the same fluffiness of the traditional Filipino delicacy and the creamy goodness of the French pancake. Eating it is like enjoying a taste of the provincial and the modern at the same time. Gillette, part owner of the cafe,  is proud to say that they’re the first to come up with the concept of bibingcrepe.

I don’t have the exact measurements, but the largest bibingcrepe is almost 10 times the size of the regular bilao.

The bibingcrepe was already cut in half when I arrived, so much for being late. There was also a design your bibingcrepe contest earlier where the bloggers got a chance to design their own bibingcrepe. They used chocnut, marshmallows, chocolate Nips, chocolate sprinkles among others to design their bibingcrepes. Here are the results:

Those are just the cutest bibingcrepes aren’t they? We had a lot of fun in the event! Specially when the owner told us that we can take home a part of the bibingcrepe. The bloggers were like kids taking turns, violently I must say, in getting a part of the bibingcrepe to take home. Some of us even took four boxes of the bibingcrepes home. I almost got four too, but I was a bit hesitant to show my “pigginess” to the blogging public so I took home just two of the boxes. Here is a video taken by Azrael of this bibingcrepe banter.

Aside from the Bibingcrepe, foodies can also look forward to enjoying home-cooked Filipino food, like Bangus, Binagoongang Baboy and Beef Caldereta. For first-timers, the Crispy Adobo is not to be missed. Served with a generous helping of rice, egg and pork cooked so tender with a little bit of zest, this dish will make anyone come back to Halfmoon Asian Café.

Foodies can also partake of the cafe’s myriad choices of Asian favorites: Siomai, Sirloin Tapa, Spanish Sardines and Gambas. To cap off a delicious meal, they can choose from a variety of hot or blended coffee drinks: Halfmoon Americano, Cafe Latte, Mocha, Cafe Bonbon, Chai Latte, Cool Mocha, Coffee Ice Blend, and many more.

A New Kind of Miracle

27 Nov

Admit it. It is so easy to be selfish during the holidays and splurge all your hard earned 13th month pay to yourself just because you deserved it. How many times have you thought about giving a chunk of that money to the less fortunate, which does not include your relatives and family?

I for one am guilty for filtering my Christmas list to friends and family. But now is the time to extend your reach and give something back to our less fortunate brothers and sisters. One way to do that is through Miracle Whip’s Miracle Machine.

Miracle Machine is a social network application and its objective is quite simple: to get people and their friends and their friends’ friends working together to make miracles happen for the less unfortunate. Think Facebook but instead of status updates and comments, you get opportunities to help.

To set the wheels of Miracle Machine in motion, visit, click on the Miracle Machine tab. Maybe there’s one miracle or two you’d be able to help us make happen and you might also consider spreading the word to your friends. There might be someone in your friend list or your friends’ friend list who has the means to answer a call for help or support a specific cause.

If we get everyone to pitch in, we can show that as more people become part of Miracle Machine, we get to make more and more amazing things happen!

The following recipients will benefit tremendously if everyone decides to take part:

Kythe Foundation hopes to help Angelalyn Magalano, a 13-year-old angel who suffers from Nephoric Syndrome and psoriasis by making her wish come true of meeting a pilot and talk about flying.

Jamboree Mountaineers hopes to make the indigenous tribes’ Christmas in Wawa, Montalban merrier by trekking there and delivering food for Noche Buena.

Childhope Asia hopes to keep street children warm this Yuletide Season by providing them with new underwear and clothes.

Kaeskwela hopes to fill the empty libraries of public schools in far-flung areas in the country with educational books.

The Philippine Animal Welfare Society (PAWS) hopes to find abandoned dogs and cats new families to take them in by making them adoption-ready through grooming.

Sagip Buhay and Philippine General Hospital hopes to provide medical assistance for those who don’t have the means and access to proper healthcare with new blood pressure devices and Thermoscan thermometers.

Firefly Brigade and Tiklop Society hopes to collect 10 bikes and bike safety gear for people in urban communities to help them get from one place to another faster and safer so they can be more productive in their work.

Tahanang Walang Hagdan hopes to give back to the 326 volunteers who have selflessly devoted their time to the organization by giving them gifts this Christmas.

Resources for the Blind hopes to record an audio storybook for blind children to bring them to the world of wonder and imagination.

Museo Pambata hopes to make 2, 000 children happy this Season of Giving by gifting them with pre-loved storybooks and toys.

St. Martin de Porres Charity Home hopes to spread holiday cheer with a potluck party for the underprivileged kids under its care.

Finally, for the 12th miracle, a fully functional miracle conduit will be made available on the 12th day of December to organizations who need it and people with something to give.

To date, there are a lot of companies and people who reached out through this endeavor and help make some of the wishes turn into reality:

If you don’t have the money, there are others ways to help. Just go to the link above for details. 🙂

Holiday Ham for the Holidays

21 Nov

Its that season once again of good cheer and being nice instead of naughty, uhhh, right. Its also the time for Noche Buena and forgetting that you are on a diet. 😀 I grew up with a mom who ensures that we always have ham during Christmas. Yes, Christmas is never complete without it.

Time and again, ham is the poster boy for all Christmas festivities. Christmas won’t be complete if there is no ham served during Christmas Eve. Here in the Philippines, families do not usually serve the entire ham to the family, rather they keep most of the ham in the freezer and enjoy it little by little. I did not know that this “custom/habit” only happens in Filipino families! Its probably due to the fact that Christmas ham is quite expensive and we only get to taste it during this festive season.

That’s why if you are looking for the perfect gift, why don’t you give your friends, family, relatives the gift of ham (pun intended). If you are looking for something new, CDO introduces their finest ham to date:  Holiday Ham: The Premium-Cut Ham. The bloggers were invited to the launching of their new product last Saturday and we were able to have a look and taste this new product that CDO offers.

Here are three things which make this ham the best among the rest.

First is that the Holiday Ham is made from one whole boneless meat from the hind leg which is the best cut of pork for hams. Hind leg ham is tastier and meatier compared to the more common shaped hams. Shaped hams are already processed and although brands would use meat from the other parts of the pork, nothing can beat the goodness found only on the hind leg of pork.

Second, the Holiday Ham is a high-quality smoked ham. The net marks attests to that. Only whole-meat hams can be smoked in ham nets because if it isn’t, pieces would fall off.

Lastly, Holiday Ham has no extenders. The appearance, taste and texture tell the truth. The ham is meat, juicy, and flavorful, and consumers really get the best value for their money.

Chef Rob Pengson presented some sleek ideas different ways on how to prepare the Holiday ham. He also answered some questions on what is the best way to preserve the ham once its opened (as we all know, Filipinos love to “freeze” food) little did I know that we can only leave the ham in the freezer for 1 week once its opened. I got to tell Mama that!

Apple iPad up for grabs

To make the holidays a cut above the rest, Holiday Ham will be giving out an Apple iPad tablet computer. Interested parties need only to register with their name, Facebook page URL, mobile phone number, and email address. It’s that easy!

The registration is on the Holiday Ham website and is open until December 20, 2010.

A Day at Nido Fortified’s Science Discovery Center

7 Nov

I have a confession to make: I miss field trips.

You know, those yearly thing in school where you get to ride  a bus with your classmates in elementary and get excited to go to all these educational places. Field trips are not as fun as they were when we were in high school, maybe because our school chooses venues that are far too kiddie for our angsty high school taste.

Yesterday, my sister and I get to experience those elementary days again when we decided to visit Nido Fortified’s Science Discovery Center at the Mall of Asia. It is also the premiere of Passport to the Universe in their snazzy Planetarium, the spectacle in the place that I am really excited about.

(That’s my sister in the middle) The Digistar Planetarium is a 15 meter 3-d Planetarium, which is considered to be one of the best in the Southeast Asia, with its all dome video playback and its star field and astronomical capabilities.

It literally brought us to the edge of our seats! The setting is your common movie house but the silver screen is at the ceiling shaped spherically. Giving you the illusion of seeing the night sky, only that you get to see planets, stars, etc. while Robert Redford, Sean Bean or Tom Hanks narrates to you the history or facts of the images presented.

We were able to watch Passport to the Universe with the oohs and aaahs of the kids we were watching it with.

The Digistar Planetarium is a must-go if you plan to bring your kids to the Science Discovery Center. Here are the shows featured in the Planetarium:

  • Dawn of the Space Age – Featuring the exciting early days of space exploration! Be part of the historic Sputnik launch and experience magnificent Lunar landings.
  • Cosmic Collisions – Take a thrilling trip through space with these cutting-edge simulations of cosmic collisions and impacts! This show is narrated by Robert Redford.
  • Passport to the Universe – Take a grand tour of the universe from solar system to deep intergalactic space then take a ‘virtual shortcut’ back to earth through a black hole while listening to Tom Hanks as he narrates the feature.
  • Seven Wonders- Turn back the time and witness the ancient wonders of the world, see their present-day counterparts and get a glimpse of some of the universe’s greatest wonders. The show is narrated by Sean Bean.

SM Science Discovery Center also features other exhibits that your kids can interact with. My personal favorite is the Fear Shadow Wall, which simulates the feeling of being scared. You can attempt to collect fruit from a Jungle tree and if you are too careless, be attacked by a leopard. The leopard-attacking thing didn’t scare me at all, but your kids might love it. 🙂

That’s me and my sister trying out the Fear Shadow Wall

You also get the chance to fly an aircraft by their flight simulator. There’s a small LCD screen with the usual aircraft controls, simulating what the pilots see aboard a spacecraft.

You can also send email messages four years into the future through their ultra cool time capsule!

Take your kids to the Science Discovery Center or bring your friends to experience that field trip vibe again. 🙂
